Station names on Melbourne's Stony Point Line
No intro, let us just push forward.
Leawarra
Langwarrin (closed)
Baxter
Somerville
Tyabb
Tyabb is an aboriginal word that means mudhole. Not much else to say.
Hastings
Hastings is most likely named after a seaside port in Sussex, England. Hastings apparently means 'son of the austere man' which is not exactly something that you want to be.
Bittern
Bittern is named after the Australasian Bittern, an endangered bird species that can be found on the Mornington Peninsula.
MorradooInfo on this station is a little sketchy, but the name seems to have been chosen in a local naming competition. Morradoo is an aboriginal (most likely Boon Wurrung) term for 'powder and shot' and was the original name of Crib Point.
In 1996, Morradoo gained its current name after originally being known as 'Rail Motor Stopping Place No. 15'. These stopping places were basically stops on the line that did not have proper station status.
Crib PointCrib Point is possibly named after the huts or 'cribs' that were built in the area.
Stony PointStony Point name is... kind of a mystery, if you know anything about the name, please let me know.
Conclusion
That is all for now, tune in next time for the Sandringham Line, the last rail line we need to cover in Melbourne!
