Walking along the Warburton Rail Trail

Something different for this week, I walked along an old trail about a week or two ago. And now I am going to write about it (wow, riveting content)!

Description

The Warburton Rail Trail is a cycling and walking trail that roughly follows the path of the Warburton Railway line starting from Lilydale. The train line that was in operation between 1901 and 1965. The path is 40 kilometres long if you follow the full route, although most people do not follow the entire length of the route because of how uninteresting the section in Lilydale is. During this walk you will see various points of interest, such as old railway stations, massive swathes of trees, various waterways that you can walk across, and towns that vary between small and slightly less small. You will also see plenty of bike riders, walkers, and even horse riders throughout your journey!

The Lilydale to Mount Evelyn section of the route is the hardest, consisting of a pretty steep that is far steeper than anything else the trail has to offer, after this, it is smooth sailing.

After Mount Evelyn, you'll mostly see the various points of interest that I was talking about earlier. Wandin, Seville, and Woori Yallock are all significant towns, so make sure to check them out if you are in need of something. Stations at this point are around three to six kilometres away from each other. The section between Woori Yallock and Launching Place is the largest distance out of any of the stations, so make sure to use the toilet at Woori Yallock before you begin.

At around Launching Place, the distance between the former stations gets smaller, and you start following the Warburton Highway into Yarra Junction, possibly the town with the most going on. You can rest here and have a look at the Upper Yarra Museum if you fancy, before continuing your trip to the rather barren Wesburn.

The trail stops following the Highway just after Yarra Junction, but joins back onto it at Milgrove. The section between Milgrove and Warburton is the absolute best of the route, with beautiful views of a mountain, as well as of the Yarra River. A beautiful place to be located at for the last few kilometres.

The trail finishes at the town of Warburton, a beautiful town with amazing views of Mount Donna Buang. Various other walks await you at Warburton, such as the Yarra River walk, and the O'Shannessy Aqueduct Trail. You could also just take the bus back to Lilydale (or Chirnside Park), that could work too.

And now, for some pictures

Great Trail

Overall, this was a very fun trail to walk on, with the scenery changing quite a bit throughout the journey, making it feel like I was making progress on the walk. There is not much else to say about this trail, other than that you should totally try to this out for yourselves!

Conclusion

Hope you enjoyed the change of pace from our regular programming, just felt like talking about a trail I had walked on, that is all.
