Station names on Melbourne's Belgrave Line

And now continuing on to the other branch line, the Belgrave line! Lilydale branch line article can be found here, while stations between Richmond and Ringwood can be found here.

Heathmont

Heathmont's name comes from its elevated location, as well as its native shrub land being similar to Heath shrubs.

Bayswater

Bayswater was named after a property in The Basin, which was named after Bayswater in London, which was the J.J Miller's birthplace (Miller was the owner of the property).

Bayswater stations appears to have originally supposed to be given the name 'Macauley', named after the nearby Post Office at the time. There is a street called 'Macauley Place' that references the original name.

Boronia

Boronia is named after the Boronia flower. The reason for this name was because Councillor Albert Chandler grew the plant in his nursery.

Ferntree Gully

Ferntree Gully acquires its name from a scenic gully located in a park in what is now the suburb of Tremont. This was a particularly popular destination in the Nineteenth century.

Ferntree Gully has had various names attached to it throughout its one hundred and thirty-one year life.

Ferntree Gully's first name was 'Lower Ferntree Gully', a name that refers to the suburbs elevation in comparison to nearby Upper Ferntree Gully. In 1962, the station was renamed to 'Ferntree Gully', and was then renamed again to 'Fern Tree Gully' in 1972, although the 1962 name is the more common spelling.

Cemetery station appears to have been a name given to Ferntree Gully station when it was first in planning, being named after the cemetery located east of the station. Scoresby station also appears to have been a name suggested to this station, being named after the suburb located a fair ways away from the station.

Upper Ferntree Gully

The station is located near Ferntree Gully, but is on a higher elevation, hence the name.

It seems that just like the station to the west of it, Upper Ferntree Gully was also originally supposed to be known as 'Scoresby', although information is sketchy at best.

An article from 1889 suggesting that Upper Ferntree Gully should be the chosen name of a railway station, as opposed to the then-currently proposed station name of Scoresby.

Upwey

Upwey is named after a property in the area, which derived its name from a town in England. Upwey in England is located on the River Wey and located on the upper part of the river.

Tecoma

Named after the Tecoma stans (yellow bells) that are present in the nearby area.

Belgrave

For our final entry today, Belgrave's name was inspired by a mountain, which was named after a chapel in Leeds.
